High speed automated cell sorting

A leading manufacturer of measuring instruments and test arrays in the field of clinical diagnostics and life science required an innovative positioning solution for Fluorescence activated cell sorting of live cells. For this requirement, we developed a multi-axis solution to simplify the most complex sorting tasks for high-speed flow cytometric sorters.

This XYZ System sorting cells to 500 nm:

This high-speed XYZ cell positioning system impresses with speed up to 530 millimeters per second and reduced complexity. The motion resolution of 0.5µm at high speed enables you to quickly detect cells and particles at sub-µm level and then collect them in separate collection vessels. You avoid contamination by highly accurate mechanics for optimized droplet break-off point.

Further, a new system with moving mass compensation was developed for sorting speed with movements up to 1000mm/s. No matter whether you are researching cancer cells, microparticles or microorganisms - this XYZ positioning system is individually customizable to your application and sample complexity.

In conventional cell sorters, there is a three-way trade-off between sort speed, sort purity and sort yield. This XYZ Stage allows selecting for purity in one sort-direction and yield in another, enabling simultaneous recovery of virtually all the target cells that would otherwise be lost to achieve that high purity. This enables you to sort faster without losing extremely valuable cells, and without sacrificing purity of the principal sort.

A fully interpolated controller guarantees fast 3D movements. The positioning system prevents the penetration of liquids and emission of particles with closed cover of all axes throughout the entire movement. The sterile compatible design is guaranteed by smooth, wipeable and metallic surfaces. In addition, the system is capable of logging, storing and outputting all operating and control parameters in real time for each batch and thus fully meets the high documentation requirements of medical technology.
